ROBERTSBRIDGE CHARITY CUP FINAL 2009/10

HAWKHURST UNITED 3 – 3 WESTFIELD III

Hawkhurst United won 4 - 2 on penalties.

Both Hawkhurst and Westfield had won penalty shoot-outs on their way to the Robertsbridge Charity Cup final and so it was no great surprise when the final was decided in the same way.

The Hawks were missing John ‘clean sheet’ Baxter in defence but Grant Hyner passed a late fitness test and the rest of the team was unchanged.

Hawkhurst started well on a wide pitch with Harry and Kingy dominating the right hand side and creating a lot of problems for the Westfield defence. For their part Westfield looked threatening going forward but neither side created any clear chances. The first goal came from a driven corner by Jason which Barry headed home with the keeper stranded. Minutes later it was 2-0 when another quality corner from Jase went straight in off the post (no dubious goals panel verdict required on this one Bob as we’re not having an o.g in a cup final).

At that stage it looked as though the Hawks would win comfortably but the referee had other ideas as he harshly penalised Grant for handball and Westfield were back in the game from the spot kick.

Hawkhurst quickly restored their two goal lead with the best goal of the game, Fergie fed Kingy on the right and his superb cross was headed home by Barry.

Whilst the first half belonged to the Hawks, the second was clearly won by Westfield. The Hawks had trouble clearing their lines and often seemed to be caught out at the back. Westfield’s second goal came when the Hawks’ defence was all on the right hand side and a good pass was finished by a forward in acres of space on the left.

Both teams hit the bar, Jason with a superb free kick while Zippy should have done better with his follow up header. The Hawks brought on experience (Channer and Wiggins) and looked like they might hang on but in the last minute Grant’s clearing header was turned in from the edge of the box through a crowd of players.

And so to penalties – Paul stepped up for the Hawks’ first penalty and, after 2 hours of discussion with the ref, calmly scored. Westfield levelled and Barry put the Hawks back in front (to claim his hat-trick?). The Hawks’ advantage increased as the second Westfield kick crashed back off the bar and Zippy bobbled one into the net. Westfield struck back but Fergie blasted home for 4-2. Finally the cup was secured as Paul ‘Ji Sung park the’ Buss saved Westfield’s fourth attempt.

Well done to everyone involved and especially to Marco, Sags and JB who missed out on playing in the final but played their part in the cup run.

In our final match report for the season, this week’s special mention goes to Paul and Grant for all their hard work in securing a third place league finish and a cup win this year. Many thanks to you both from all the players!
